Help organize notices, appointments and records. Support everyday needs such as transport and childcare. Ask what the service member wants shared, respect counsel’s confidentiality, and use approved channels. Avoid posting evidence or identifying case details.

Match the office to the problem
For suspected misconduct, ask for military defense counsel. Victim counsel, legal assistance, security managers and civilian attorneys have different roles. Ask whom each professional represents.
I was told to report for questioning. Do I have to answer?
Your duties and rights depend on who is asking, why, and whether you are suspected of misconduct. Do not ignore an order to report. If questioning may concern suspected misconduct, ask to speak with counsel before deciding whether to make a statement or consent to a search.
Can I refuse Article 15 or other nonjudicial punishment?
Some service members may have an election, but important exceptions and consequences exist. The answer can depend on status, location, and service rules. Review the full notice with counsel before making or waiving an election.
What happens after court-martial charges are preferred?
Preferral formally starts charges; it is not a finding of guilt. Later steps depend on the offenses, preliminary-hearing requirements, referral decision, forum, motions, and applicable rules.
How long do I have to answer a reprimand or separation action?
Deadlines vary and can be short. Start with the date and instructions on the notice, preserve the entire packet, and promptly ask the appropriate legal office or qualified counsel to confirm the governing deadline.
Can I appeal a clearance denial or revocation?
Administrative review is generally available, but the route depends on your affiliation and notice. Follow the procedure in the letter you received and coordinate with your security office. DCSA identifies different mechanisms, including Personnel Security Appeals Board and DOHA processes.
Can a family member speak with the service member’s lawyer?
Family can provide support and ask for general information, but counsel represents the client. Confidentiality and the client’s choices may limit what counsel can disclose without permission.
